Lively involvement in wellness activities promotes greater independence and healthy senior years. The Wellness Center, directly adjacent to the Community Building, houses the indoor pool, a stationary equipment room, an indoor walking track, a health clinic, and an audio-visual-equipped auditorium/theater. Residents enjoy water aerobics, lap swimming, or just a refreshing dip in the pool. In inclement weather, the indoor track allows residents to continue their daily walks and talks without interruption. Movies and popcorn are an all-time favorite in the "virtual" theater.
Twin Lakes Wellness Program collaborates with the local YMCA in Burlington, North Carolina. Professionals in fitness offer water-based classes in water aerobics and land-classes in Flexibility and Balance, both wonderful exercise programs for older adults. YMCA instructors also offer an introductory session on the cardio equipment in the stationary equipment room. Residents may contract with these professionals for a personal evaluation to help determine what activities and exercises are needed to accomplish personal goals. Many of these activities assist arthritic residents in staying limber and mobile, and all exercise programs are beneficial to healthy aging.
